Born in 1983 in Issaquah, Washington, Costco has become one of the largest wholesale membership clubs in the world today.
Founded in nearby Kirkland, Washington by James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman, Costco opened up its first warehouse in Seattle in late 1983. Just ten years later, Costco and Price Club merged, helping it later surpass Sam's Club in total sales on an annual basis. As of 2008, Costco employed over 125,000 people, mostly in the United States. Costco also offers its members, which are in the tens of millions, a generous return policy, online sales, and their own line of products sold under the name of "Kirkland Signature."
Costco's biggest competitor is Sam's Club, a company born out of Walmart. In 2007, Consumer Reports offered its own review of the top two wholesale clubs in the United States, offering both pros and cons of each store.
