Crochet is considered a "needlecraft," and is a close cousin to knitting. Crocheting utilizes a small hook to create "chains" in a single piece of yarn. Traditionally, crochet is used to create afghans, especially when those afghans are comprised of granny squares (small squares that are crocheted individually -- often with varying patterns and colors -- and then sewn together to create the finished project). However, you can often find crochet patterns for sweaters, purses, pillows, toys, and even dresses.
There are hundreds of different crochet "stitches," used to create different effects. Basic crochet stitches include: chain, cluster, double crochet, crossed double crochet, half double crochet, long single crochet, loop stitch, and many more.
