David Gilmour was, in a sense, the voice of Pink Floyd. While not one of the founding members of the band, Gilmour's vocals and lead guitar are a vital, distinctive part of the overall Pink Floyd sound.
Gilmour joined the band because guitarist/vocalist Syd Barrett, the main source of the band's early psychedelic era, was becoming more erratic and less dependable as a result of mental illness and considerable drug use. After Barrett's departure, bassist Roger Waters became the driving force behind the band's identity and direction but it was Gilmour's voice and guitar that became the unmistakable sound of the band.
Waters, Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright together formed what for many is the classic Pink Floyd lineup, although there are many who believe the Barrett years were the band's best.
Tensions between the band members, particularly Waters and Gilmour, led to Pink Floyd disbanding in the mid-1980s. After a lengthy legal battle, Gilmour won the rights to the name Pink Floyd. Gilmour, Wright, and Mason recorded two new studio albums under the Floyd name.
As a solo artist, Gilmour has released three studio albums and one live album. Gilmour released his self-titled debut in 1978. He followed that up with About Face in 1984. His next solo album, On An Island, wasn't released until 2006. Gilmour then released the double live album Live in Gdansk in 2008.
