Disneyland, a world-renowned theme park, opened in Anaheim, California on July 17, 1955 to a "press preview". It's first day was such a disaster -- 101 degree heat, counterfeit tickets, gas leak, plumbing issues -- that for many years, July 18 was listed as its official opening day. Its creator, Walt Disney, wanted it to be a magical place for both adults and children to enjoy.
The park took exactly one year to build and cost $17 million. Walt had difficulty raising the money. He created a TV show, Disneyland, for fledgling network ABC, as a way to both promote Disneyland and provide unique programming for ABC. In return, the network helped finance the park.
Disneyland was the first Disney park to open, and the only one to open while Walt Disney was alive. The amusement park is organized into "lands": Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, Adventureland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, Mickey's Toon Town (the newest land, opening in 1993), and Main Street USA. Some of the most well-known and beloved rides at Disneyland include Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Star Tours, Big Thunder Railroad, and Jungle Cruise. In 2007, nearly 15,000,000 people visited the park.
