Doctor Who is a BBC science fiction series that centers around the adventures of The Doctor, a time lord from the planet Gallifrey. Throughout The Doctor's travels a number of companions help him on his adventures. To travel in space and time, he uses a ship known as The TARDIS which is in the shape of a police box.
The first run of the program aired on November 22, 1963 and ran until 1989. After a 16-year absence and a TV movie, the show returned to the BBC in 2005 with Russell T. Davies at the helm. Davies had previous success with numerous television shows including Showtime's Queer As Folk. The series is currently on a break and will return with a full season in 2010 with several specials to cover the gap in between starting with the 2008 Christmas special "The Next Doctor".
Thanks to the character's ability to regenerate a new body, a number of actors have played The Doctor over the years, with the longest run going to Tom Baker who played the part from 1974 to 1981.
Most recently in the new version of the show, David Tennant played The Doctor from 2005, taking over the role from Christopher Eccleston, who did only the first season of the new series. Tennant is set to leave the series in 2009.
