Engagement is a promise to marry. Generally the engagement is the period of time between the proposal and the wedding ceremony. Long engagements were once considered the standard; and were traditionally used to allow any impediments to materialize during the waiting period. Engagement customs vary widely from culture to culture. It is customary in many cultures for the engagement to be initiated with a gift from either the bride or the groom. In some areas of India, a gosling is the gift of choice. Maximilian I, was considered the first to use a diamond ring as an engagement gift. It remains one of the most popular engagement gifts today.
