A Flight Simulator describes any system designed to simulate flight. The term covers commercial flight simulation platforms, but is more commonly used to describe PC-based simulators used by hobbyists and for flight training.
The most common PC-based flight simulators in use today are Microsoft Flight Simulator and X-Plane, although the future of the former is now in doubt following the closure of Aces Studio - the Microsoft Flight Simulator development team. There are also Open Source alternatives, such as FlightGear.
A vast community and industry has built up around these simulators, supplying add-ons and hardware to enhance the simulation experience.
