Video games, unlike other mediums, require a certain amount of skill to actually complete. Game cheats are often programmed in by the game developers to facilitate completion of the game for those who are too challenged by it but still wish to experience the remainder of the gameplay. Game cheats also allow for fun distractions like the formerly commonplace "Big Head Mode" or Paintball Mode in the N64's Goldeneye. Cheats can be entered into a PC console mode as if they were lines of code, or they may simply be exploits within the game's framework.
Game guides and cheats used to exist largely in print, but the Internet has since largely superseded them. A wide variety of websites host game cheats and walkthroughs, like GameFAQs or 1up.
