In the world of blogging, "giveaway" is a loose term encompassing sweepstakes and contests, often held informally on small blogs offering prizes on behalf of sponsors in an arrangement where both the sponsoring company and blogger gains some SEO benefit as well as exposure to a niche demographic.
Although U.S. contest law technically applies to even the smallest blog giveaways, many are offered without formal rules and employ entry methods that cannot be strictly validated or may not be consistent with legal requirements.
Collecting and sharing news about blog giveaways is also a popular form of blog post and a way for bloggers to distribute "juice" and collectively raise their profiles online. Some blogs have emerged that are specifically dedicated to listing giveaways on other blogs. One "giveaway listings hub," PRIZEY, has introduced a database-driven submission system and the requirement that submitted listings offer a simple entry method for non-bloggers.
The most common form of entry method for blog giveaways is by leaving a blog comment with a contact email address. Common techniques for creating "buzz" around a prize or blog have evolved to allow a host of extra entries for tasks like tweeting news of the giveaway, subscribing to a blog's RSS feed, and blogging about and linking to a giveaway post. The latter is so widespread some blog readers start blogging simply to have the opportunity to enter these sweepstakes.
