Gout was first recognized as a diagnosable condition by Thomas Sydenham in the 1600's. We know now gout is a quick acting form of arthritis caused by a build up of uric acid in the body. Gout can affect anyone but it is more likely in men than in women. Symptoms of gout appear quickly and are reported by sufferers to be quite painful. Suffers will suddenly have a very painful swollen joint which is hot to the touch. Gout is commonly found in the big toe but can affect joints through out the body.
A healthy diet as well as herbal remedies are beneficial to gout sufferers. Diets low in salt and animal fats and high in high in vitamin C have been shown to lower uric acid levels. Herbs such as alfalfa have been used for centuries by herbalists to help prevent and treat gout.
While there are many blogs and websites purporting to be authorities on gout and the treatment thereof, if you feel you are suffering from gout consult your physician for diagnosis.
