While there is no universally accepted definition for “green jobs” (or the related term "green collar jobs") this phrase has generally been used to refer to occupations that contribute to positive impacts on the environment.
Green jobs can be in the public, private, or non-profit sector and include jobs in areas such as energy efficiency, green building, natural resource management, recycling, and renewable energy. Other definitions of green jobs reflect a broader view of sustainability and include areas such as fair trade or corporate social responsibility.
Organizations including the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Solar Energy Society have produced reports on green jobs that document the number of such jobs and project future employment trends. The green jobs sector has also seen the development of specialized education and training programs, green job fairs, and other services to meet current and future needs. Blogs and the mainstream media are providing resources for green job seekers as well as highlighting the potential opportunities and challenges facing this sector.
