Americans spend more than $3.5 billion per year to treat thinning hair or baldness. There are many products marketed worldwide for hair loss treatment. The most effective treatment for hair loss is hair restoration; however, it is also the most costly.
There are FDA approved hair loss treatments. Finasteride is the generic name for Proscar or Propecia. Finasteride has been approved by the FDA for prostrate problems, but it was also found to treat male hair loss. In 1997, the FDA approved the use of 1 mg dose of Finasteride for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
Minoxidil (loniten) was the first drug approved by the FDA as a hair loss treatment for male pattern baldness. It also was developed originally for an alternative use; high blood pressure but one of the side effects was the growth of hair. Researchers found that if Minoxidil was applied directly on the bald spot it would grow hair in that area. It is often recommended as a fall back treatment if Finasteride doesn’t work.
Hair loss treatment blogs provide reviews of products and techniques. The American Hair Loss Association is one of the more accurate resources documenting changes in the world of hair loss.
