Head lice, which are small parasitic insects found living on the scalp and neck, are common in young children. Over 12 million suffer from this annually in the US
These tiny lice can be seen by the naked eye. The eggs of lice look like yellow, tan or brown dots and are laid on the hair shafts close to the skin’s surface. They hatch into baby lice - smaller than a sesame seed and a brownish tan in color. After 7 days, they become adults and slightly larger. They can survive up to 3 days on the scalp during which time they start laying eggs.
The bites from lice may cause the scalp to become itchy and inflamed while persistent scratching may lead to skin irritation and sometimes infection. As lice are highly contagious, spreading quickly and easily from person to person especially when children are together in groups, head lice treatment should commence at the first sign. Head to head contact is the main cause of spreading head lice.
