Healing means to restore to health of mind, body and spirit, and from its Old English root, to make whole. Healing is the action of bringing about this restoration and healing is also the process of returning to health and wholeness.
Healing can involve allopathic medicine or complementary and alternative medicine or a mixture of both. There is ongoing debate about the claims and effectiveness of each approach, but other discussion suggests that the aims and scope of each are different and answers may lie in greater clarity between the definitions of healing versus curing.
If healing relates to a wider understanding of health and wellness, then healers of mind, body, and spirit come in many forms: doctors, psychiatrists, spiritual healers, religious ministers, vets, dentists. The term ‘healer’ could refer to anyone who brings about an improvement in well-being.
Healing can be brought about through many different activities: caring, listening, advising, helping, administering, operating, dispensing, praying, and even hugging and laughter.
