Hello Kitty is a Japanese cartoon cat who has become a worldwide symbol of cuteness. First appearing on a change purse in 1974, the little white anime kitten, developed by Sanrio, is now the star of a billion-dollar business. Kitty and her friends appears on clothing, toys, makeup, home appliances, video games, cards and dishes. In the 1980s and 1990s there were several Hello Kitty animated TV shows. These were shown primarily in Japan and the US. There is even an album of music devoted to her, entitled Hello Kitty Hello World.
In Taiwan, not only is there a Hello Kitty restaurant, but a Hello Kitty themed maternity hospital. There are many fan sites devoted to Hello Kitty and her friends. Some detail new products, while others are simply devoted to showcasing the world of Hello Kitty and to fan appreciation.
