High School Musical is and award-winning Disney Channel Original Movie released on January 20, 2006. A modern day Romeo and Juliet scenario in which two students from separate cliques try out for lead parts in their high school musical which results in a divided school. Despite the attempts of others to frustrate their dreams -- and pressure from their peer groups -- the students persist, and becoming inspirational characters. The movie stars Zac Efron as Troy Bolton (the jock), and Vanessa Anne Hudgens as Gabriella Montez (the beautiful geek).
High School Musical was the most watched Disney Channel Movie up to that point with a soundtrack that was also successful. It spawned a High School Musical franchise consisting of sequels, a theatrical film, musical tours, stage performances, and ice tours. it also sparked a cottage industry of books, clothing and video games.
