Honda is a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. It is currently the fifth largest automaker in the world, second largest in Japan behind Toyota.
Founded as a research institute in 1946 that produced two-cycle motorbike engines, Honda incorporated as a motorcycle producer in 1948 and opened American motorcycle operations in 1959. In 1960, they began producing cars and became a major player during the 1970s with the introduction of the Civic. The 1970s also saw Honda open their first North America plant in Marysville, Ohio for motorcycle production, followed by an auto plant there in 1982. In 1986, Honda became the first Japanese automaker to unveil a separate brand name for luxury vehicles with Acura.
Today, Honda continues to produce cars and motorcycles, along with jet engines, electric generators, and power equipment. They also have worked in robotics, with their most well known robotic work being ASIMO, a four-foot high robot featured in several commercials.
