Impeachment refers to the process wherein public officials are formally charged with political wrongdoing, which occurs before an assessment is made of their capability to remain in office. Thus, a subsequent conviction and removal from office will always be preceded by a formal impeachment hearing.
The impeachment of a public official arises as a consequence of alleged ethics violations for which federal charges originate in the House of Representatives and state charges originate from state legislatures.
The articles of impeachment list the specific violations and infractions of a public official during his or her tenure in office. Once the articles of impeachment are drafted, charges will be brought against the public official and the impeachment hearing will commence.
