Born to missionary parents in 1974, Joaquin Phoenix (nee Bottom) was the middle child among five talented siblings in a creative, counter-culture family.
Joaquin’s acting career began with a guest spot on the TV series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (where his brother River was a regular cast member) and reached a pinnacle when he won a Golden Globe Best Actor award for his starring role in Walk the Line. Joaquin also received BAFTA and Oscar nominations for his portrayal of Johnny Cash opposite Reese Witherspoon’s June Carter Cash in that film.
In October 2008, following the release of his latest film, Two Lovers, Phoenix announced he was through with acting. The following January he announced his new career as a hip-hop artist. His disheveled appearance, slurred speech and detached manner during a February guest appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman had bloggers wondering if Phoenix was seriously disturbed or if it was all just a hoax.
