Kettlebells are common strength training aids in Eastern Europe. Many famous Russian weightlifters in the 1940s and 1950s started their training using kettlebells. They are basically hand weights in the shape of a round ball with handle, named because of their function as a dumbbell and resemblance to a small kettle.
Kettlebells range in weight from two pounds to over 100 pounds. Kettlebells are becoming more popular as they take up very little space and you can do a wide variety of full body movements with just three kettlebells. Athletes such as cyclist Lance Armstrong and even female celebrities such as actress Kate Beckinsale have taken up kettlebells in recent years.
