Knitting needles are tools used by hand-knitters to create knitted fabrics. They can be made of different materials, for different purposes, and are of different lengths and widths.
Many knitters prefer wood needles because they have a comfortable weight and feel. Others select metal needles such as aluminum or stainless steel because the slippery material enables them to knit more quickly. Typically, plastic needles are the least expensive.
There are three different types of knitting needles: single point, double point and circular. Single point needles have a point only at one end. Double point needles allow the stitches to be worked from either end. Circular needles feature two needle tips joined by a length of cable, and are often used for items like socks which are knit as a tube.
The length and width of the knitting needle determines the size of the stitch that is created. A small needle (US size 0) is used with a thin yarn to produce a very fine knit fabric. Very large needles are used with thick yarns to create enormous stitches.
