On October 1st, 2008, Kohls celebrated opening its 1,000th store in the United States, capping an impressive run for the company which opened its first department store nearly a half-century ago in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
Max Kohl, an immigrant from Poland who came to the United States in the 1920s, didn't start out in the department store business. In fact, Max first opened up a series of supermarkets in the Wisconsin area shortly after World War II. After opening up the first store in 1962, Kohl's remained independent until 1978 when the BATUS Retail Group, a British-American Tobacco Company, bought controlling interest in the chain. In 1992, Kohl's went public on the New York Stock Exchange, trading under the symbol KSS.
Kohl's is currently based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
