Library 2.0 is a term that is used to describe the use of social software tools within libraries, but it is also a shorthand for a professional philosophy that is user-focused.
Originally coined by librarian blogger Michael Casey to encourage libraries to adopt Web 2.0 tools in order to enhance user services, the phrase has been the touchstone of controversy, with some decrying it as vacuous and simply an excuse to play with shiny new tech toys. However, many advocates for user-focused services in libraries have taken up the banner of Library 2.0 to represent both the tools used and the ideology of making it easier for users to access information and library services.
