Most software is provided to users with a license which defines the limitations within which the user can make use of the software, sometimes called an End User License Agreement (EULA). This license will usually come in accompanying documentation, but may also be called up during the installation process with a dialog in which the user has to agree or disagree to accept the terms of the license.
The terms of licenses can be quite varied, from open source licenses which basically allow for free use of the software, to shareware licenses which require a post-usage payment after a certain period of time, to commercial licenses which a user tacitly agrees to by purchasing a piece of software. For examples of commercial licenses see the extensive list provided by Adobe. Creative Commons offers a useful tool for generating a CC license.
