Liposuction is one of the most popular operations within the discipline of Plastic Surgery. The procedure is quite simple in its design. A small pointed instrument (cannula) placed within the fat is attached to a suction device. The cannula is moved through the fat to remove a portion, leaving the patient thinner in the region treated.
There have been safety issues with the operation, and some deaths, leading to recommendations as to how much fat can be safely removed at one time. Although the medical community has repeatedly classified the procedure as intended for contouring, there are still those having it for weight loss. The design of the cannula has been modified to include powered handles and laser (e.g. Smart Lipo TM) and ultrasound (e.g. VASER TM) enhanced tips. The effectiveness of these enhanced liposuction systems is widely open to debate.
On the blogosphere, liposuction is frequently discussed on celebrity blogs. Actress Tara Reid's Frankentummy is a frequent subject. Unfortunately many "liposuction" blog posts really just present caricatures and offer little in the way of useful information for the potential patient.
