A mattress is a pad or mat for sleeping usually the mattress is placed on a platform, box springs or other foundation to keep it off the ground. Historically, mattresses were filled with straw or feathers. Modern mattresses usually contain an inner core which can be metal springs, or some variation of foam filler. Mattresses can also be filled with air or water or natural fibers, depending on preference. Often different people achieve a different quality of sleep depending on the specific sleep surface. Most mattresses are from six to eighteen inches in thickness.
A quality mattress should last between 7 and 10 years before replacing. Memory foam mattresses can often exceed that and will last 12-15 years. Using a firm base will prevent sagging. Two sided mattresses should be flipped twice per year.
