A meme on the internet is usually a reference to a post which bloggers use to interact with one another. The concept is simple. Write something and see how many "tagged" people scribble their own version. They are particularly effective on social networking sites, which have the advantage of lots of members so word can get around as quickly as possible.
Anyone can start a meme. All it takes is one idea, whether or not it comes from someone else. Even those blogs with few viewers will potentially get at least one person to grab the meme and run with it. All fires start with one spark, and a meme can be just the ticket to greatness.
Some memes are simple, while others are very complex. The question 'What's your favorite color?', for example, is basically a one-word answer. Write 5, 10 or 25 things about yourself is likely to take longer.
The term originates from the concept developed by Richard Dawkins, which described cultural ideas or concepts being transmitted in the same manner as genes.
