The word messenger has a variety of meanings. According to Dictionary.com, the word messenger is primarily defined as "a person who carries a message or goes on an errand for another, esp. as a matter of duty or business."
While the term messenger has different uses in and out of the tech world, the basic premise behind it is the same. In the world of technology, the word messenger is most associated with instant messaging services, such as Yahoo! and MSN. These programs allow people to contact other people and deliver any message they want to, either by typing or through audio, or even via video teleconferencing with the help of webcams and today's advances in Internet technology.
Outside of the tech world, a messenger is a real person who delivers messages and packages to businesses, usually via bicycle in a major metropolitan area, such as San Francisco or New York.
