If you're planning a trip to Mexico, and you decide you'd like to drive its rustic inroads and scenic highways, be prepared to properly insure your vehicle – or you’ll lose it. The most common misconception about driving in Mexico is that you can purchase extra coverage from your current insurance company and be fully protected. In fact, what most travel insurance blogs discuss is 'extra coverage' for physical damage or medical payments, not vehicle insurance. Much less popular are Mexico Insurance blogs relating to the country's vehicle insurance policies.
Motor vehicle accidents are considered a criminal offense in Mexico, and Mexican authorities will only recognize domiciled Mexican insurance. Failure to produce proper insurance will almost always result in vehicle seizure. Of course, you don’t have to sneak into Mexico and buy insurance once you get there – there are many specialized insurance companies that work with the major Mexican insurers, and are licensed to provide fast, easy and (most importantly) proper Mexican auto insurance that the Mexican authorities will recognize.
Don't forget: insurance of any kind is big business. Make sure you find a reputable, rated insurance company that can provide you with domiciled Mexican insurance and peace of mind. Buen Viaje!
