Nokia is a popular brand of cellular telephone originating in Finland. The Nokia corporation began as a wood pulp mill and branched out into many areas including rubber manufacturing, computers and ultimately telecommunications. They were pioneers in the development of GSM technology and their Nokia 1100 phone, which was released in 2007, is the best-selling cellular phone of all time.
For most of its corporate history the Nokia corporation was unusual in that most of the stockholders were the company's employees and the residents of the towns of Espoo and Nokia in Finland. This changed in the 1980s when the company went public and international. Nokia divested itself of everything but its telecommunications division and closed down its last plant in Finland.
Most major cellular phone providers carry several models of Nokia phones.
