Nutrition is a popular topic in the blogosphere, yet the scientific soundness of nutrition advice varies widely. Because the training of individuals who identify themselves as nutritionists equally varies, it's useful to check their education and experience.
Generally, a nutritionist is a health professional who advises about diet and health. However, it's important to know that depending on geographic location, use of the term "nutritionist" is not regulated, whereas the terms "dietitian" and "registered dietitian" typically are.
Many registered dietitians refer to themselves as nutritionists. The American College of Nutrition's Certification Board For Nutrition Specialists provides certification for scientifically trained nutritionsts. The term "nutritionist" is often used are with nutrition scientists, public health nutritionists and sports nutritionists. Typically a nutritionist should have at least a four-year degree in nutrition, food science, dietetics or a closely related field.
