The Olympic Games epitomize the true nature of competition, athletes representing their regions in hopes of being crowned the best.
The Olympics have had two incarnations. First there were the Ancient Olympic Games, widely believed to be started in 776 BC by Zeus and Heracles, which ultimately were outlawed in 4th century AD by Emperor Theodosius I. The second generation games, also known as the Modern Olympic Movement, were restarted in their original birthplace, Athens, Greece, in 1896, with the help of French nobleman Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin. By 1924, the Summer Olympics were joined by the Winter Olympics, with the inaugural games occurring in Chamonix, France.
The last Summer Olympics to take place was in 2008 in Beijing with the next games to be in London in 2012. The last Winter Olympics were in 2006 and held in Turin with the next games to be held in Vancouver in 2010.
