Pakistan, which means "land of the pure," is an Islamic nation that was formed when the British left India and partitioned what is now Pakistan and India in 1947. This led to three wars between the two countries and strife in Kashmir, which exists to this day. Concerns have grown in recent times because both countries are nuclear powers and routinely victimized by terrorist groups.
Pakistan was home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and over the years has been settled and invaded by the Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Turks, Afghans and the British. Both Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan invaded the area. It also hosts a section of the Silk Road, which was a commerce route that spanned from Europe to China.
In its short history, Pakistan has suffered corruption and political upheaval, which normally results in the military taking over the country. While Pakistan is considered an ally of the West, it hosts large tribal areas where the government has little to no control. Shortly after 9-11, Osama Bin Laden fled Afghanistan and is believed to be hiding in these areas. The Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan prior to the U.S. led invasion after 9-11, operate out of these areas, too.
