Within political discourse, peace is a state of tranquility and agreement among nations. It exists as a condition of tolerance among nations where diplomatic efforts have resulted in an amicable political environment.
The existence of peace may result from a declaration of peace, a ceasefire, or an assumed alliance among nations defending similar ideologies. Within the population, however, peace may result as a consequence of civil disobedience, protest or boycotts. The pacifist assumes that it is only through peaceful protest and demonstrations that one can properly arrive at coexistence. Not all acts of civil disobedience, however, assume a pacifist stance. Nonetheless, the pacifists believe that only through just means may one arrive at a just end. Thus, arriving at peace through violence, according to pacifist ideology, would be immoral.
