PHP is a highly scalable and popular open source dynamic language most commonly used for web applications. PHP powers many popular web applications such as the popular blog-publishing application Wordpress and Drupal as well as large sites like Digg and Facebook. PHP has evolved over the years to use the Zend engine created by Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski. Later versions of PHP support object oriented features that are gaining traction and keeping PHP relevant.
There are a wide variety of mature PHP libraries and tools available. Two main sources for PHP libraries are PECL and PEAR. PHP tools range from Smarty templates to CakePHP to the PHP Eclipse editor.
