The word "Plastic" comes from the ancient Greek word "plastikos," which means to mold or give form.
Plastic Surgery is the art and science of changing the shape of the human form. It has had its origins in the reconstruction of deformities. Skin flaps were performed in ancient India as early as 800-2000 B.C. to reconstruct nasal defects. The history has not been consistent since these times however and much of this was due to cultural pressures to not explore human anatomy.
In contemporary times, Plastic Surgery is often thought to be synonymous with Cosmetic Surgery, although Cosmetic Surgery is a part of the greater discipline of Plastic Surgery. In the blogosphere, discussions of Cosmetic Surgery abound often as it pertains to celebrities and often in a negative light.
