Launching in late 2000, Sony's shadowy PS2 stormed the gaming scene and toppled all who stood before it, namely the Nintendo64 and Sega's Dreamcast. Riding the wave of popularity generated by its predecessor (PSone), the PlayStation 2 quickly began outselling everyone, despite widespread hardware shortages.
A console is nothing without good software, though, and this was one of the system's strongest points. Many now famous franchises debuted or were revived on the PS2, including Metal Gear Solid, Prince of Persia, and Grand Theft Auto, to critical acclaim and great commercial success.
With its successor the PS3 on the market now, PS2 sales have slowed somewhat, but it remains popular for its relatively low price and huge catalogue of excellent software, containing immensely popular hits like those mentioned above, as well as unique exclusive gems like Ratchet and Clank, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Drakan, and the original God of War games.
