Also known as the news media and the mass media, the press includes broadcast media (i.e. cable networks, television stations, radio stations), print media (newspapers, magazines, newsletter publishers), and more recently online media (such as blogs and websites). Using standard journalistic techniques, the implied mission of the Fourth Estate is to present news of current interest and lasting importance to their readers and audiences. For better or worse, the growth of weblogs has caused traditional media to both question and reconfigure their offerings to the public.
A strong press can function as a form of governmental oversight and has been linked to overall democratic vitality. Nations which do not enjoy freedom of the press often suffer from widespread censorship as well as direct and indirect governmental oppression.
Some good blogs about and for the news media include Poynter Online, Online Journalism Blog, and Buzz Machine.
