Priceline was established in 1998 by Jay Walker, a self-made digital businessman and venture capitalist Jesse Fink, then went public with their IPO in 1999. As of 2008, Priceline.com had approximately 300 employees working for them, most out of their headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut.
Booking travel on the Internet in the 21st Century has become mainstream, but almost all sites involve directly buying tickets or booking hotel rooms at fixed prices. Priceline is one of the few sites which allows travelers to buy flights, rent cars, or get hotel rooms around the world by naming their own price in hopes that the company on the other end of the transaction will accept their bid. Of course, this hasn't stopped travelers from trying to beat the system any way possible.
Priceline.com is also well known for their series of advertisements, featuring former "Star Trek" leading man William Shatner, playing the part of the "Priceline Negotiator."
