Queen is the term used to describe the wife or widow of a king or tribal chief. A female sovereign or chieftain is also a queen, as is the fully developed fertile female of social bees, ants, and termites whose function is to lay eggs. The term may also be used to describe a female of eminence having supremacy in a specified field, the "queen of soul", the "queen of fashion", and so forth.
"Queen" is also the name of multi-award winning British rock band fronted until 1991 by Freddie Mercury. The band formed in 1970 when Freddie Bulsara joined Brian May and Roger Taylor of the band Smile replacing a departed band member. Freddie renamed the band Queen, and changed his name to Freddie Mercury.
Their first album Queen was released in 1973, their notorious 5 minutes and 55 seconds "Bohemian Rhapsody" in 1975 . Queen released 16 albums with Freddie Mercury as frontman, not including compilations. Freddie died of AIDS on November 24th, 1991. On November 6, 1995, Queen released "Made In Heaven", their last album with the original remaining band members. In 2005 they returned to the world of music as Queen with Paul Rodgers.
