Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, known professionally as Shakira, is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter from Colombia who sings in both Spanish and English. A popular artist in Latin America since the mid-1990s, she entered the English-language market with her 2001 album Laundry Service, which sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Some of her most famous songs include "Whenever, Wherever," "Hips Don’t Lie," and "Ojos Asi. "
Born February 2, 1977, Shakira is of Spanish, Italian, and Lebanese descent. A philanthropist, she has acted as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and in 1997, she founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which supports schools for underprivileged children in Colombia. She also co-founded the charity ALAS (Fundacion América Latina en Acción Solidaria), dedicated to early childhood development in Latin America.
