Singer/songwriter Sonya Kitchell released her first full-length album, 2006's Words Came Back To Me, at age sixteen. Drawing on jazz and folk influences and with rich, soulful vocals, she distinguished herself as a formidable and progressive talent.
Among those impressed by Kitchell's promising debut was jazz legend Herbie Hancock, who selected her to sing on his all-star tribute to Joni Mitchell — a primary influence on Kitchell — 2007's River: The Joni Letters, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Kitchell's cover of Mitchell's "All I Want" appears on Amazon.com and non-U.S. iTunes versions of the album. Also in 2007, Kitchell toured with Hancock in support of the project.
In 2008, Kitchell released her sophomore effort, This Storm, which found her further developing her craft to include a more expansive sound as well as lyrics infused with social and political commentary.
