Stocks are investments that represent a share of ownership in a publicly traded company. Investors purchase stocks in hopes that they’ll appreciate in value and/or pay dividends. In January 2009, there were almost 10,000 publicly traded companies whose shares traded on stock exchanges or over the counter.
The introduction of discount online brokers has opened up stock investing to a wider audience of people internationally. Over the long term, stocks are thought of as the most lucrative investment available to the general public – as a class having returned an average of 10% annually through the first half of the 2000s.
Because of their importance as investments, stock market commentaries have emerged on the blogosphere in a big way.
