Sudoku is a 9x9 grid logic puzzle that requires players to fill each box in the grid with a number from 1-9 in a pattern that does not have duplication within the block, row or column. The puzzle begins with a partially filled grid and is available in a range of skill levels and variants. Variations include smaller or larger grid sizes or puzzles that require the number pattern to add up to a specified sum. Three dimensional and internet versions are also available.
The emergence of Sudoku on mobile products (iPod/iPhone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile, etc.) has garnered 60 million downloads in more than 100 countries sustaining the popularity. A quick tag popularity search of Sudoku found consistent interest in this number based game with hundreds of Sudoku blogs promising new puzzles, history, tips and techniques for the game. A yearly World Sudoku Championship began in 2006 and has been conducted in various locations throughout the world with significant prize monies.
Howard Garns, an American architect is credited as the father of the modern version of this puzzle which it didn’t reach mass appeal until Nikoli; a Japanese company renamed it as Sudoku, meaning single digit and released their version in 1984.
