In 1983, the UN World Commission on Environment and Development (informally known as the Brundtland Commission) created a definition for sustainable development that has been been widely adopted and adapted: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
In recent years, sustainability has come to address the integration of economic, social and environmental impacts of human activity. Thus sustainability can have applications in businesses, government or NGOs in such diverse areas as energy, agriculture, consumer goods, education and land use. You'll find sustainability addressed at blogs such as Tree Hugger, Green Inc., Business for Social Responsibility and World Changing.
