Target is an American retail company founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1902 as the Dayton Dry Goods Company. The company entered the discount merchandising market in 1962 with its first Target department store, and expanded its operations out to the east and west coasts of the US between 1982 and 2000. Target is currently the fifth largest retailer in the US. The stores carry housewares, health and beauty aids, home furnishings, and complete lines of clothing, shoes, and accessories for men, women, and children.
Since approximately 2007, Target has endeavored to move their image closer to that of a high-end department store rather than a discount store. Their slogan is "design for all" and they enlist some of the top clothing, decor, and cosmetics designers to create fashionable, affordable pieces. Past clothing designers with collections at Target include Proenza Schouler, Jovovich-Hawk, Rogan, Converse, Isaac Mizrahi, and Erin Featherstone. Cosmetic collections include Napoleon Perdis and Jemma Kidd. Home designers include Cynthia Rowley and Todd Oldham.
