Terrorism is the specific threat or use of terror, fear, and violence as a tool of propagating civil unrest and social paranoia. The intent of terrorist organizations is to undermine a people’s sense of national security, in fear of an imminent and often clandestine attack.
The power of terrorism rests in the psychological threat to one’s way of life. Terrorists directly target social customs and norms, which are firmly embedded in practice. More specifically, terrorism is the attempt to change practice, namely religious, social, cultural, and political practices, by means of intimidation and a constant threat of violence.
The greater the fear among intended victims, the more effective terrorism is in reinforcing social paranoia. Therefore -- among the masses -- as fear and terror increase, faith in the government’s ability to protect the people decreases.
Primarily, bloggers discuss terrorism in terms of its relation to religious fundamentalism, which often results from the acts of domestic terrorists, though international terrorism also affects a global community. For bloggers, terrorism presents an interesting topic for discussion because the threat of terrorism affects us all.
