TV Guide is a weekly national magazine covering scheduled television programming, individualized for every broadcasting market, and feature stories on related subjects. A popular feature has been the crossword puzzle based on all things regarding television viewing. First published in 1953 in digest size, it continues to grow and change to keep up with the times.
As cable became more prevalant in homes in the U.S. and Canada, their at-home subscriptions started to dwindle as many service providers offered scrolling channel guides available to television viewers. To counter-balance that, the shift was made to a standard magazine size and other features were added. They began to list localized cable channels and their programming. A new back-of-the-book section joined the crossword when they added a brief synopsis of all the movies that would be shown on broadcast and cable channels.
While you can still buy the TV Guide in stores and via subscription, it has stretched further to keep current. There is a television version with program information (date/time/channel) and original content like coverage of red carpet events and a weekly entertainment news magazine. Online, users can sign in free of charge and personalize their viewing experience with blogs, forums, the ability to program TiVo® DVRs, and more.
