U2 has been one of the most popular, acclaimed, and successful rock bands of all time. The Dublin-based quartet was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The band has had the same four members since their 1976 inception. Formed in Dublin, the band is Bono (aka Paul Hewson) on vocals, The Edge (Dave Evans) on guitar, drummer Larry Mullen Jr., and bassist Adam Clayton.
Over a period of years, the band built a following in Europe and America. The 1984 album War went a long way towards breaking them into the mainstream. War was followed by The Unforgettable Fire, the first of many successful collaborations with producer Brian Eno. The Unforgettable Fire is best known for its song "Pride (In The Name Of Love)," a song inspired by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Following The Unforgettable FIre, U2 released two albums that have taken them to the top. 1987's The Joshua Tree and 1991's Achtung Baby spawned numerous hit singles, won them Grammy Awards, and sold millions of copies around the world. Both albums are in the top 100 Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 Albums of All-Time. In 2009, they released No Line On The Horizon.
In addition to their success as musicians, the band have been active championing social and political causes. Bono was a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.
