US Airways was started in 1939 by the du Pont family of Pittsburgh as All-American Airways, delivering mail via small planes out of its hometown hub.
Over time, US Airways evolved through the help of mergers, including the acquisition of Pacific Southwest Airlines and Piedmont Airlines in the 1980s, and a completed merger with Phoenix-based America West Airlines in 2005. Between those years, US Airways had some financial strife, including failing to sell itself to other potential suitors for almost 10 years before the America West merger. US Airways also had financial difficulties after 9/11 shut down the industry and when fuel prices skyrocketed in 2007 and 2008, hitting most airlines in the pocketbook, causing them to raise prices and install new fees.
US Airways is currently based out of Phoenix, Arizona, operating over 3,500 domestic and international flights a day. US Airways operates its hubs out of Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Phoenix.
